The James Frederick Paschal Award is given by the Columbia Scholastic Press Advisers Association (CSPAA) and honors state or regional school press association officials who have distinguished themselves in the field. The 2018 Paschal Award will be presented to Leslie Dennis, director of Scholastic Media Organizations in the School of journalism and Mass Communications at University of South Carolina.
Dennis is being honored for her exceptional work with the Southern Interscholastic Press Association, a regional group that offers services to schools in 15 states, the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association, and for reinvigorating the Carolina Journalism Institute.
The presentation of the Paschal Award will be at the 94th Annual CSPA Convention at Columbia University on March 16, 2018.
The James Frederick Paschal Award is named for the late director of the Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association and former editor of the CSPAA Bulletin.
The CSPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award programs. Owned and operated by Columbia University since 1925, the Association now enrolls 1,100 members throughout North America and in certain overseas schools and colleges following the American plan.
Its major services include three annual competitions and awards for members, including the Crown Awards, Medalist Critiques and the Gold Circle Awards as well as planning two conventions (one national, one regional) and a week-long summer workshop at Columbia University, plus social media and other teaching activities.
