CSPA presents 81 Scholastic Gold, 115 Silver Crowns at 2015 Student Awards Convocation
NEW YORK, NY - The Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced its top awards for scholastic publications at the 91st annual Scholastic Convention.
This year a total of 1,203 newspapers, magazines and yearbooks and digital publications issued during the 2013-2014 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2015 Crown Awards Program.
The digital publication entries were judged at Columbia University on November 1, 2014 and the other categories of print magazine, print newspaper and print yearbook as well as “hybrid” a membership classified as a publication that works to combine their digital and print publications as one, were judged on December 13-15, 2014. All publications were judged by members of the Board of Crown Judges.
The grand total of 235 Crowns consists of 60 magazines, 35 print newspapers, 17 digital news sites, 49 hybrid media and 74 yearbooks. Of these, 196 Crowns will be given to scholastic publications and 39 Crowns to collegiate publications.
The Crown Awards require a different judging process from the Medalist critiques. Regular CSPA members are invited to submit a second copy of their publication for Crown judging. From among those entries submitted, the Crown Awards are considered at Columbia by panels of invited judges, working in small groups to review each publication. In contrast, Medalist Critiques are the work of a single adviser-judge.
During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. These follow the same general principles of good journalism that organize CSPA’s Fundamentals books and also the Critiques used in our Medalist evaluations. The standards are the same, but they are applied differently from one judging process to another. Crown Awards summarize overall excellence in the entire publication while Medalist Critiques compare each publication against a printed set of standards contained in the written scorebook. Crown Awards function as a “top-down” view of general excellence; Medalist Critiques offer a “bottom-up” perspective, noting specific strengths and weaknesses.
The Awards Convocation for Scholastic Crown recipients took place during the 91st Scholastic Convention, on Friday, March 20, 2015 at Columbia University in New York City.
Edmund J. Sullivan, executive director of the CSPA, presented plaques to those winners attending the Convention. Remaining awards will be mailed beginning April 1st.
The CSPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award programs. Owned and operated by Columbia University since 1925. The Association offers three major services: 1) annual competitions and awards for members, including the Crown Awards, 2) planning two conventions (one national, one regional) and a week-long summer workshop at Columbia, plus 3) small press publishing activities to support an e-zine and one to two books per year.
The judging panel included: Kathy Daly, retired adviser, Denver, CO; Nancy Hastings, retired adviser, Highland, IN; Alan Murray, president and co-founder of Uncharted, Malvern, PA; Mark Murray, director of technical services and systems integration, Arlington Independent School District, Arlington, TX; Cheryl Pell retired journalism professor, East Lansing, MI; Eddie Vega, writer instructor, editor and photographer, New York, NY; Randy Yeip, graphics editor, New York, NY; Kathleen Zwiebel, retired adviser, Pottsville, PA.
