2016 - Awards For Student Work Crown Awards - Scholastic Recipients

CSPA presents 76 Scholastic Gold, 123 Silver Crowns at 2016 Student Awards Convocation

NEW YORK, NY - The Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced its top awards for scholastic publications at the 92nd annual Scholastic Convention.
This year a total of 1,186 newspapers, magazines and yearbooks and digital publications issued during the 2014-2015 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2016 Crown Awards program.
The grand total of 234 Crowns consists of four digital magazines, 18 digital news, seven hybrid magazines, 52 hybrid news, 60 magazines, 28 print newspapers, 65 yearbooks. Of these, 199 Crowns will be given to scholastic publications and 35 Crowns to collegiate publications.
“We’ve changed the timing of our Crown Awards judging,” said Edmund Sullivan, CSPA’s executive director. “Magazines were judged first, followed by print and hybrid newspapers in early October, then digital (online) news sites in November and finally, yearbooks in early December.”  Announcements of Finalists followed each judging with the full list in December.
The Crown Awards require a different judging process from the Medalist critiques. Regular CSPA members are invited to submit a second copy of their publication for Crown judging. From among those entries submitted, the Crown Awards are considered at Columbia by panels of invited judges, working in small groups to review each publication. In contrast, Medalist Critiques are the work of a single adviser-judge who follows a detailed rubric.
During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. These follow the same general principles of good journalism that organize CSPA’s Fundamentals books and also the Critiques used in our Medalist evaluations. The standards are the same, but they are applied differently from one judging process to another. Crown Awards summarize overall excellence in the entire publication while Medalist Critiques compare each publication against a printed set of standards contained in the written scorebook. Crown Awards function as a “top-down” view of general excellence; Medalist Critiques offer a “bottom-up” perspective, noting specific strengths and weaknesses.
The Awards Convocation for Scholastic Crown recipients took place during the 92nd Scholastic Convention, on Friday, March 18, 2016 at Columbia University in New York City.
Edmund J. Sullivan, executive director of the CSPA, presented plaques to those winners attending the Convention. Remaining awards will be mailed beginning April 1st.
The CSPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award programs. Owned and operated by Columbia University since 1925, the Association offers three major services: 1) annual competitions and awards for members, including the Crown Awards, 2) planning two conventions (one national, one regional) and a week-long summer workshop at Columbia, plus 3) small press publishing activities to support an e-zine and website.
The judging panel included: Kathy Daly, retired adviser, Denver, CO; Beth Fitts, retired adviser, Oxford, MS; Nancy Hastings, retired adviser, Highland, IN; Monica Hill, director of NCSMA, Chapel Hill, NC; Alan Murray, president and co-founder of Uncharted, Malvern, PA; Mark Murray, director of technical services and systems integration, Arlington Independent School District, Arlington, TX; Cheryl Pell retired journalism professor, East Lansing, MI; Randy Yeip, graphics editor, New York, NY; Kathleen Zwiebel, retired adviser, Pottsville, PA.
