Spring Convention

DECEMBER 7, 2021 (NEW YORK, N.Y.) – After careful consultation with Columbia University administration regarding the health and safety of everyone in our community, CSPA has made the difficult decision to defer its 2022 national Spring Convention, tentatively scheduled for March 16-18 on the Columbia campus.

CSPA executive director Edmund J. Sullivan has been in constant contact with the relevant University officials both by email and in face-to-face meetings.

“I am heartbroken to share this news with our friends and advocates,” Sullivan said. “Yet, as a department of the University, we must honor and respect the administration’s decision. CSPA is committed to do its part to protect the health and safety of both the University and student media communities.”

The University has instituted an absolute vaccine mandate, in conjunction with required indoor masking. While the administration reports that 99% of students, faculty and staff are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, there is an unstated fear that visitors would come from or travel through places with varied vaccine requirements, if any.

For this reason, Columbia’s current regulations restrict on-campus events to members of the University community that follow the existing vaccine requirements. No decision has yet been made as to whether that restriction will be lifted for the Summer of 2022.

CSPA is actively exploring options for an alternative, virtual experience to provide student media training, coaching and networking. Updates will be shared on the CSPA Web site and through its various social media accounts in the near future.

Sullivan said that he hopes to welcome students and advisers from across the country in March 2023, for what will be his 48th CSPA Convention.

“We would have loved to welcome such hardworking advisers, their students and other supporters in person next March. I hope everyone understands how much we regret this situation for all,” said Sullivan.
