CSPA presents the 2004 Scholastic Crown Awards

NEW YORK, NY - The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) announced its top awards for scholastic publications at the 80th annual Scholastic Convention at Columbia University in the City of New York.

Of the 1,810 current CSPA members eligible to enter the Crown Awards, 1,514 magazines, newspapers and yearbooks actually submitted copies for this competition. Judging took place at Columbia University from December 14-17, 2003 by the Board of Crown Judges. Publications were judged on writing/editing, design, concept, photography, art and graphics.

Seventeen newspapers, six magazines, and 15 yearbooks received Gold Crown Awards while eighty-five other scholastic publications received the second highest CSPA award, known as the Silver Crown. Gold Crowns have been presented annually since 1982, and Silver Crowns have been given since 1984.

The Awards Convocation took place in the Rotunda of Low Memorial Library, located at Columbia’s historic Morningside Heights campus, on Friday, March 19th at 2:30 p.m.

Edmund J. Sullivan, director of the CSPA, announced the winners while C. Bruce Watterson, vice president for institutional advancement at Shorter College (Rome, GA) and chair of the Columbia Scholastic Press Advisers’ Association’s (CSPAA) Committee on Judging Standards and Practices presented plaques to those winners attending the event. Remaining awards will be mailed to winners beginning March 29th.
