CSPA presents 12 Collegiate Gold, 28 Silver Crowns at 2018 Student Awards Convocation
NEW YORK, NY - The Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced its top awards for collegiate publications at the 2018 College Media Convention.
This year a total of 1,100 newspapers, magazines and yearbooks and digital publications issued during the 2016-2017 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2017 Crown Awards Program.
“We’ve changed the timing of our Crown Awards judging,” said Edmund Sullivan, CSPA’s executive director. “Magazines were judged first, followed by print and hybrid newspapers in early October, yearbooks in late October and finally digital (online) news sites in November.” Announcements of Finalists followed each judging with the full list in December.
The Crown Awards require a different judging process from the Medalist critiques. Regular CSPA members are invited to submit a second copy of their publication for Crown judging. From among those entries submitted, the Crown Awards are considered at Columbia by panels of invited judges, working in small groups to review each publication. In contrast, Medalist Critiques are the work of a single adviser-judge who follows a detailed rubric.
During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. These follow the same general principles of good journalism that organize CSPA’s Fundamentals books and also the Critiques used in our Medalist evaluations. The standards are the same, but they are applied differently from one judging process to another. Crown Awards summarize overall excellence in the entire publication while Medalist Critiques compare each publication against a printed set of standards contained in the written scorebook. Crown Awards function as a “top-down” view of general excellence; Medalist Critiques offer a “bottom-up” perspective, noting specific strengths and weaknesses.
The Awards Convocation for Collegiate Crown recipients took place during the College Media Convention, on Sunday, March 8, 2018 at the Marriot Marquis Hotel in New York City.
Edmund J. Sullivan, executive director of the CSPA, presented the plaques to those winners who attended the Convention. Remaining awards will be mailed beginning April 1st.
The CSPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award programs. Owned and operated by Columbia University since 1925, the Association offers three major services: 1) annual competitions and awards for members, including the Crown Awards, 2) planning two conventions (one national, one regional) and a week-long summer workshop at Columbia, plus 3) small press publishing activities to support an e-zine and website.
